Last month, chapters turned in their totals for SAL’s National Food Fight Against Hunger, where all chapters were encouraged to collect as many nonperishable food items as they could. To give every chapter an equal chance to win, SAL chose a winner for each category of chapters: small, medium, large as well as a fundraiser winner for chapters who raised money instead of canned goods.

This fall, Sigma Alpha Lambda is making service matter by feeding the hungry through our 2nd Annual “Food Fight Against Hunger”. By joining together across the country, every SAL chapter has the opportunity to make a big impact in the lives of others through Feeding America as well as your local food bank. Participating chapters will collect non-perishable food items and compete against other SAL chapters in their same membership size category to see who can come up with the most by the December 1st deadline.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is a proud supporter of the President’s Volunteer Service Awards. The three different levels of awards are given to young adults who complete 100 or more volunteer hours in a 12-month period. This past year, we helped 30 of our members to accumulate enough volunteer hours to win an award.

In the 2010-2011 academic year, Sigma Alpha Lambda chapters came out in full force to assemble 39 Relay for Life teams and raised over $28,000 for the American Cancer Society. We are proud of the dedication of our members and thank them for their significant contributions to a cause that has touched many lives!

The $10,000 Anna Orthwein Memorial Scholarship is available for SAL members at GWU. Applications for this annual award, established by Mrs. Jayne Orthwein, Mr. Bill Orthwein, and Sigma Alpha Lambda, are available through the Columbian College or Arts and Sciences. This year’s winner has been announced but make your plans for applying next summer.
