The Anna Orthwein Memorial Scholarship
The Anna Orthwein Memorial Scholarship at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences was established by Mrs. Jayne Orthwein, Mr. Bill Orthwein and Sigma Alpha Lambda in memory of Anna Nicole Orthwein, Columbia College ’09 who passed away on June 4, 2007.

Anna’s life served as inspiration to young people committed to shaping their futures as they relish the experiences of the present.  A biology major at The Columbian College, Anna worked hard to achieve academic excellence. She placed on the Dean’s List each semester, was a member of several honors organizations including Sigma Alpha Lambda, and as a National Cancer Institute intern at the National Institutes of Health co-authored several publications. Anna had planned to acquire a medical degree in dentistry as part of her commitment to the study of the biological sciences.  Anna moved through life with a grace and appreciation for what the moment offered, recognizing that the journey was just as important as the destination. On that journey she remained true to herself and looked for that same honesty in others. She was vivacious, optimistic, funny, and hard-working - a good friend, a wonderful daughter and sister.  Anna was a positive force in the lives of those she touched.

It is in this spirit of life, appreciation for science education, and the desire to enrich authentic relationships through inspiration that the Anna Orthwein Memorial Scholarship has been established.

This scholarship will entail an annual award of $10,000 minimum to a deserving student with a declared major in one of the biological sciences, chemistry, physics, or geology who has achieved a 3.6 cumulative grade point average as of the close of the Spring 2010 semester with a demonstrated interest in contributing to the well being of others.  Priority will be given to members of the GW chapter of Sigma Alpha Lambda.

Students who wish to be considered should complete the attached application and return their materials to:

Columbian College Dean’s Suite
Phillips Hall 212
Attention: Kate Osterman

Applications are due on or before May 15th.

Applications will be reviewed after spring semester grades are in, and the recipient will be notified before August 1.
